Phronetic Leadership

”Phronesis (practical wisdom) is the Aristotlean virtue of moral thought. It is the capability to make the “right decision” in a given situation in order to enhance the quality of life for oneself and others.”
How do you know what is the “right” thing to do in making leadership decisions? Expertise, intelligence, and experience are necessary but no longer sufficient to enable leaders to make far-reaching (and potentially catastrophic) decisions.

Benefits

The ITC Phronetic Leadership program develops your ability to make judgements on goodness and take virtuous actions that best serve the common good in tough times.
  • Identify what makes decisions foolish or wise from your own life.
  • Practice techniques for solving dilemmas in business and in life.
  • Develop the capacity to make decisions that more fully incorporate your core values and beliefs.
  • Construct practical decision templates for discerning, deciding, and acting for the common good.
  • Understand and apply the 6 abilities of Phronetic Leadership: The ability to make judgements on “goodness”; the ability to create a shared sense of meaning from any context; the ability to grasp the essence of things in any particular situation; the ability to reconstruct particulars into universals; the ability to use any available means well to realize concepts for common goodness, and; the ability to foster phronesis in others in order to create a more resilient organisation.

“I appreciated your openness and honest approach to such a complex area, and your obvious deep knowledge of this domain.”
--- Maurizio Floris, Program Director, Mt Eliza Centre for Executive Education - Melbourne Business School.

Implementation

The Phronetic Leadership program is a one- or two-day experiential workshop designed to enhance decision making skill when confronted with dilemmas in business and in life. Before the workshop participants complete the MVPI© (Motives, Values, and Preferences Inventory) and the LBS (Life Beliefs Survey). Individual reports are handed out on the day and referred to during the workshop.

Individual learning modules may be incorporated into existing programs or tailored to your organisation’s requirements, and include:

  • Implications of findings in neurobiology, behavioural economics and psychology to personal bias in decision making.
  • Investigation of human moral nature from both a philosophical and neurobiological perspective and how to make ethical decisions.
  • Engagement with theoretical frameworks of the psychology of wisdom such as the Berlin Wisdom paradigm, the Balance Theory of Wisdom, Moral Decision Theory, and Choice conditions.
  • Experiencing and harnessing wisdom decision making templates to make deliberately wise decisions for current dilemmas.
