Find the Right Executive Coach
How do you ensure that your company gets value from its investment in executive coaching?
- Check out the training of the coaches you use. ITC coaches have University post-graduate training in coaching or related disciplines and are members of the University of Sydney Coaching and Mentoring Association (USCMA) or the Australian Psychological Society Interest Group in Coaching Psychology (IGCP).
- Ensure that coaching is what you get. Some companies are re-branding themselves as coaching companies but really offering consulting and training. ITC is a specialist provider of evidence-based professional coaching and a recognized thought leader in the field.
- Choose a company that emphasizes the “fit” between coach and client. ITC will let the client try out different coaches in order to ensure the “chemistry” is there from the start.
- Coaching must be optional. Executive coaching isn’t for everyone. ITC seeks to qualify clients to make sure that coaching is something they really want – and that their efforts to change and grow will be appreciated and nourished by senior executives and critical colleagues. Such support is what sustains and enhances the benefits of coaching.
- Negotiate success criteria with care. To produce results, coaching goals should be measurable. ITC looks for ways to measure feedback on precisely the same behaviors identified as key goals of the client. Although coaching is a powerful relationship it can only help people achieve their full potential. It can’t help people to exceed it.
- Look for clear and ethical agreement from all stakeholders. ITC encourages vigorous and candid conversations, with clear boundaries of confidentiality, and defined accountabilities for each participant in the coaching agreement. See our code of professional conduct here.
- Coordinated coaching can serve a larger strategic objective. Coaching may be part of a comprehensive development program, including mentoring and training. To accelerate change and make it stick, ITC recommends systematically coordinating one-on-one coaching interventions to create a culture of coaching.
